How to Extract a VAT Report from a Bank Statement

How to extract a VAT report from a bank statement: VAT from inclusive amounts, taxable vs exempt lines, input and output VAT, and what to check before filing.

Calculator on tax forms

Every quarter the VAT return comes due, and the hardest part is pulling the taxable amounts out of hundreds of lines on a bank statement.

This guide shows how to extract a VAT report from a bank statement, how the VAT in each line is worked out, and what to check before you file.

What is a VAT report from a bank statement?

It is a table that takes every line on the statement, decides whether it is taxable or exempt, and estimates the VAT in it. It ends with three numbers: output VAT, input VAT and net VAT due.

How to calculate VAT from a bank statement amount

Bank statement amounts usually include VAT. So the VAT is taken out of the amount, not added on top:

VAT = amount × 15 ÷ 115
Net = amount − VAT

Example: 1,150 × 15 ÷ 115 = 150 → net 1,000
The standard rate in Saudi Arabia is 15%. In the UAE it is 5%: amount × 5 ÷ 105.

In Bayainy you choose the rate yourself, with 15% as the default, because the rate differs by country.

What counts as taxable and exempt in the report

Type of transactionTreatment in the report
Purchases, restaurants, fuel, subscriptions, bills, bank feesStandard rated (SR)
Salaries, loans, investments, transfers, cash withdrawalsExempt (EX)
Residential rentExempt (EX)
Other real estate, insurance, education, healthcareStandard rated by default; check with your accountant

The treatment comes from each line's category, so review the categories first.

The columns in Bayainy's VAT report

  • Date, description and category.
  • ZATCA code (SR standard rated, EX exempt), rate and type.
  • Gross amount, VAT and net amount for every line.
  • At the bottom: input VAT, output VAT and net VAT due.

How to extract the VAT report, step by step

  • Upload the bank statements for the tax period, a month or a quarter.
  • Review the categories and correct any on the results page.
  • Choose the VAT rate and click VAT Report.
  • Match the report against your invoices, then move the totals into your return.

What to check before you file

  • Input VAT can only be claimed with a valid tax invoice for each purchase.
  • VAT paid to suppliers who are not VAT registered cannot be claimed.
  • Zero-rated sales, such as exports, need manual treatment.
  • Deposits that are not sales, such as owner funding, carry no VAT.

The report saves hours of collecting and sorting, but the final call belongs to your accountant and your invoices. It is a working draft, not a filed return.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate VAT from a VAT-inclusive amount?

Multiply the amount by 15, then divide by 115. Example: 1,150 SAR holds 150 SAR of VAT and 1,000 SAR net.

Does ZATCA accept this report?

The report helps you prepare the return; it is not a return itself. You file through the ZATCA portal and keep your invoices.

Can I use a VAT rate other than 15%?

Yes. You choose the rate before creating the report, for example 5% in the UAE.

Which plan includes the VAT report?

Every paid plan, from the Starter plan at 29 SAR a month. See pricing.
